Bathroom Safety at Home

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury among older Canadians?

Around 1 in every 3 adults, aged 65 and older, will fall at least once each year. This accounts for 95% of all hip fractures and over 30% of long-term care admissions. About 20% of these falls will result in death within one year.

80% of seniors’ injury-related hospitalizations are due to falls and 50% of these falls occur at home—predominately in the bathroom.

Falling is not a natural part of getting older so why does it happen so often? See what Healthcare Solutions can offer in order to help improve fall safety.

Preventing Falls

Preventing falls starts with taking care of your health, keeping active, and modifying your environment.

You can reduce your chance of falling in the bathroom by making simple changes.

1. Add well-anchored grab bars by the toilet, bath, or shower

Having well-anchored and solid grab bars in convenient locations makes performing every day bathroom activities safer and more secure. We offer a wide range of sizes and finishes to accommodate your needs.

2. Use non-slip mats or strips on slippery surfaces

Wet bathtubs, showers, and bathroom floors can very slick. Adding non-slip mats or strips helps create safe surfaces you can feel confident moving around on. We have a variety of sizes and also ones that are compatible with shower chairs and benches.

3. Raise your toilet seat height

A raised toilet seat can make getting on and off the toilet easier, safer, and more comfortable. They are easy to install and many options are available (including padded raised toilet seats, flip up seats, and seats with arms or legs). Call us and ask us how to measure your toilet and find your right size.

4. Add a shower bench or hand-held shower head

A shower/bath bench, stool, or seat paired with a hand-help shower head can help make showers safer and more comfortable, especially when mobility is a concern. A majority of our products are height adjustable and accommodate to a variety of weight capacities.
